Social Events

There will two main evening events: an opening reception and a conference banquet.

Additionally, we will organize an informal get-together dinner on Sunday September 12. We also provide the possibility for JELIA 2010 participants to take part in the invited talks, poster sessions, buffet (Sep 15) and lunch (Sep 16) of the Fall School of HeCSE Helsinki Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering. For more details, see below.

Informal JELIA 2010 Get-Together, September 12th

We are planning to have an informal get-together on Sunday evening September 12. The meeting point for the get-together is at 7:00 p.m by the main entrance of the conference venue, University of Helsinki main building ("Päärakennus"), located at Fabianinkatu 33 (map). The plan is to have a walk (c. 1.5km) through some of the main sites in downtown Helsinki to Restaurant Manala, street address Töölönkatu 3 (details of the restaurant). The main course in the restaurant is included in the registration fee.

Please send an email to jelia2010@ics.tkk.fi by Wednesday September 8 to indicate whether you are able to participate in the get-together. We need this information in order to ensure an appropriate number of seats in the restaurant.

Please take the weather conditions into account and take a jacket and possibly an umbrella with you. If you are arriving later, you can join us directly in the restaurant at 8:00 p.m. (or even later).

Opening Reception, September 13th

JELIA 2010 Opening Reception takes place after the invited talk on Monday September 13th in Lehtisali, located on the second floor of the main building of University of Helsinki (same building in which also the main conference program takes place). The reception, hosted by Vice Rector Kimmo Kontula, lasts for two hours (from 20 to 22), and includes a light buffet with refreshments. Notice that this reception (as well as the invited talk on Monday) is organized jointly with PGM 2010, so you will have the possibility to interact also with PGM attendees!

Conference Banquet and Excursion, September 14th

The JELIA 2010 conference banquet and excursion takes place Tuesday, September 14 in the evening. We will first embark on a ship cruise along the Helsinki seafront. The starting point for the cruise at the Market Square (m/s RoyalCat), as pinpointed on the JELIA 2010 Google map. After the cruise, we will dock at the Suomenlinna sea fortress (detailed map), a UNESCO World Heritage site, on the island of Suomenlinna only a few minutes trip away from the Helsinki mainland. After some free-time for sightseeing, the conference banquet will take place at Restaurant Walhalla located at the sea fortress. After the dinner, a ship will take us directly back to Helsinki mainland.

Please be on time for departures, especially from Walhalla back to mainland. There is public transportation back to Helsinki by Suomenlinna ferry (once in an hour until 2am), but the ferry leaves from the other end of the island (by foot approx. 20 minutes).

Please also take the weather conditions into account and prepare yourself with warm clothing against the possible sea breeze. Although there will be enough room for everyone inside on-board during the cruise, you will also have the possibility to take in the scenery and sea air on the sun deck.

• Don't miss out an opportunity to try "lonkero" (gin long drink) which was introduced for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and has been popular in Finland ever since.

HeCSE Fall School: Invited Talks and Posters, September 15th and 16th

We have agreed that JELIA 2010 participants can take part in the invited talks, poster sessions, buffet (Sep 15) and lunch (Sep 16) of the Autumn School of HeCSE Helsinki Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering (click link for schedule).

On September 15, directly after the closing of JELIA 2010 we can join the joint PGM 2010 / HeCSE poster session at Marina Congress Center, street address Katajanokanlaituri 6 (to locate the venue, see "PGM 2010" in the JELIA 2010 Map). A buffet is served in conjunction with the poster session

On September 16, there are two invited talks:

• Stefan Woltran (TU Wien): Computational Aspects of Abstract Argumentation
• John-Mark Agosta (Intel): Network traffic anomaly detection: The story of a research project

Additionally, lunch is provided by HeCSE, and there is a HeCSE poster session during which the students of HeCSE present their research.

In case you wish to participate in some or all of the HeCSE Autumn School events during September 15-16, please register using this form (register as "other"). Registration for JELIA 2010 participants in free, and includes the buffet on September 15th and lunch on September 16th. Deadline for registration is Tuesday September 7th.
